8. How
is Kumon Method different from other tuition methods?
1) Individualised Learning Each individual / child has his own learning patterns and learning capabilities at different stages and ability. Therefore it is important that each individual / child learns at his / her own pace. In KUMON we design individualized learning plans that fits the individual / child’s learning capabilities and not use a common pace for every individual / child. Imagine if your child is already having problems following the school or tuition class. Would he or she benefit by continuing with the tuition class if he does not understand what is being taught? In Kumon we start the child with a level that he or she "can do". From here we will take the child into a fresh learning environment where he can start learning at his own pace. Under usual circumstances (most students will fall into this category) the student will be able to catch up to their school level requirement with full competence within a period of between 9 months to 15 months. After this "catching up" period, your child will then be learning above the school level requirements. Again, imagine if your child is above average and is able to handle problems beyond what the school or tuition class is teaching. Would it be beneficial if you can allow him / her to progress according to his or her ability instead of being slowed down by others? In Kumon we have the environment, materials and the necessary support to allow your child to learn several years beyond their current school level. We have students who are in Standard Three doing Standard Six Math. |
||||||
2) Consistent Study Individual / children following the KUMON Method of Learning are given consistent and suitable study materials that suits their learning capabilities. This consistent study patterns instill in them consistency to ensure success in learning Mathematics and English Language. We all know that the old belief of "consistent study" is the key to doing well in study. Here in Kumon we incorporate this old belief into delivering the program. Your child only needs to spend about 30 minutes a day doing Math. If you can ensure that your child spends about 30 minutes a day, half the battle is already worn. Remember that here in Kumon, we instill consistent study with the correct materials to help your child/children excel. |
||||||
3) Independent Learning Each Individual / child following the KUMON Method of Learning are trained and encourage to be independent while learning. This develops and promotes the analytical and application skills in dealing with their daily lives. If a child learns to do things on his or her own, it will stay longer and stay more useful with them. If we always tell a child what to do, it will hinder his growth and creativity. Here in Kumon we train and encourage children to learn on their own. Only when they face difficulties, the instructor will chip in to help them. |
||||||
4) Advanced Learning With individualized study plans, consistent study plans and independent learning skills, this is an Advance Learning Method that builds strong self-confidence and character in them. These self-confidence and character will subsequently assimilated into their daily learning behavior beyond the “KUMON” environment. |
1) Provides Support to Individual Students comes to the Kumon Center twice a week. Here they are guided on the use of the Kumon Worksheet to support their learning process. We observe their learning patterns and gives them support to enable them to effectively learn the Kumon Method. |
||||
2) Provides Educational Advise to Parents In class, we observe the learning process of students. We will correct the methods used and will advise parents on how to observe the learning behavior of the students so that parents can effectively correct them during their study at home. |
||||
3) Makes Effective Study Plans for Individual With the observation of the learning patterns and progress, we will draw up short, medium and long term plans for the individual learning. We have a very well designed monitoring system to ensure that each individual is closely monitored. One of the features of Kumon is to provide repetitive learning to enhance skills that will be useful in more advance learning stages |

What Do Kumon Students do at the Center?
We do not conduct courses in groups and our students study individually. Students can choose the day and time they want to study at the center. Classwork for the day and daily homework for the rest of the week will be assigned to them |
Time spent on studying one subject should be between 10 to 20 minutes for primary students and 20 to 30 minutes for secondary school students per session. It is more effective to have students concentrate on their studies over a short duration daily than to make them study for 2-3 hours one or two days a week. |
Students hand in their classwork which instructor will mark and return them on the same day. As students are assigned worksheets that suit their ability, they could score 100 points most of the time and this boosts their self-confidence. The confidence gained from perfect scores after perfect scores motivates them to learn more |
When students make mistakes in their worksheet, instructor will indicate their presence and students have to locate and correct them. Their learning ability is further affirmed when they are able to correct their won mistakes. |
Work for the day is completed when students have answered 100% correctly and have understood all the worksheet they had done for the day. The scores and the time taken to complete the day's worksheet will then be recorded in the record sheet by students and handed to the instructor. The instructor will consider students' mastery and speed of progress and determine the appropriate materials for their next session. |
Another fundamental of the Kumon Method is consistent daily study. Before students leave the center, they receive homework from the instructor for he rest of the days they are not at the center. If students are able to do Kumon worksheets everyday consistently, not only will their academic ability improve, they will also acquire good learning habits |
How is The Kumon Method Different from other tuition methods?
The Kumon Method of Learning is an individualized learning method that caters to the needs and the academic ability of each individual. Instead of categorizing children according to their age or school year and putting all of them through the same curriculum, we design the learning path for each of our students according to their ability and pace of learning. In other words, learning KUMON is free from age and school level restrain. We do not limit the amount of learning that preschoolers do just because they are young neither do we force older children to do more work than they should. The Kumon Method is well-accepted in over 40 countries and more than 2.6 million students are studying the Kumon way despite the widest of diversity between each country's culture and educational systems. This is possible as the method is universalized with the following characteristics:
1. Learning made easy - start
from an easy level
Before enrolment, the instructor will diagnose the individual's current learning ability to determine the level the individual can work independently. We discover that students will attempt to solve problems on their own if they are given problems that are pitched at the just-right level. |
||||||
2. Learning according to
academic ability - learning is not restricted by age nor school level
What Kumon students learn at the center may not be related to their current school level's curriculum. If necessary, we will let more capable students do works that are two or three ears above their school level. conversely, slower students may have to study Kumon materials that are two or three years below their current school level until they become competent in these levels and finally catch up with their school level. The Kumon Method does not restrict your child's learning to his age or school level. Rather it is a method that is tailor-made to suit your child's own level. |
||||||
3. Learn with Confidence - strive
for perfect score
Since your child progresses at the level that suits him, he will be able to solve problems with just a little bit of thinking. His interest to learn will grow as more and more of his assignments get perfect score. Soon, you child will be motivated by the conviction that "you can do it if you try". |
||||||
4. Thorough Revision - builds
a solid academic foundation
In Kumon, we make sure that students have sufficient revision until they can solve their problems instantly. Students will stumble at a later stage if they are haphazardly allowed to advance without a complete grasp of what they are learning at the lower level. This will impede rather than help them in their progress to higher levels. |
||||||
5. Speed and Accuracy - using
time to evaluate academic ability
Only when a student can solve problems with speed and accuracy can we consider him/her competent in his/her study. The number of correct answers as well as time taken are used as benchmarks in Kumon Method to monitor students' learning progress. |
||||||
6. Taking small steps - acquiring
ability bit by bit
The Kumon worksheet are designed in a way that allows students to proceed in small steps to the next slightly more difficult level on their own. If they are competent in the previous level, they should also be able to do the current one. Any one would be able to move up the small steps by himself/herself. |
||||||
7. Learning that elevates
self-confidence - advance beyond school level
In most cases, when a student studies with Kumon for two or three years, he will come to a stage where he will be learning things that have not been taught in school. When students are able to solve difficult problems on their won before being taught in school, they will become confident in themselves and take a positive attitude in learning |
